Dear All-

In December, I was fortunate to spend some time in Perth, Western Australia with the folks at the Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia. I have put together a photo-essay of that visit which can be accessed at: A Quiet Anniversary

Another hearing was held in the trial of two former Eternit executives in Turin on January 25. It is expected that the initial stage of the legal proceedings will take two years? To know why it will be so long, read: Eternit on Trial

News has reached us that from Jan 1, 2010 Taiwan prohibited asbestos from being used in adhesives, sealants, fireproofing, insulating materials etc. For more information on this see the news item: Taiwan Bans Remaining Uses of Asbestos, dated January 27, 2010.
Finally, the report circulated last week that the UK government was going to set up a 70 million pound package has not been substantiated. It seems that the journalist may have reported speculation as fact. No one I have spoken to has confirmed her report although there is a consensus that the UK government will do SOMETHING but exactly what and when no one is saying.
Have a good weekend,
Laurie
